Emu-wren Endangered

15 x 10 in, 1 rubber key block 2 cherry woodblocks, Sakura oil key block, gauche woodblocks on Thai kozo, edition 18. Designed and hand printed by Jo Bradley. Background woodblocks designed and carved by Tom Kristensen. The bird feathers are hand painted by Jo. Emu-wrens have tails 2.5x their body length. They have an unusual shaggy quality to their feathers, similar (but unrelated) to Emus. 750 remaining endangered Mallee emu-wrens of South Australia are living on a designated rocket launching site. Typical of Australian governments conservation management. https://Doubledaggerart.com

Aggie with Python

15 x 10 in, 0ne cherry-faced plywood block, Sumi with water-soluble COBRA oils on Nishinouchi, edition 16. Print method similar to that developed by Tadashige Ono using a single carved block and printing onto dark washi with opaque ink, in this case oil paint. Multiple impressions, without removing print from the block. Rollers and brushes used to distribute paint, Baren used to make impressions. Drying time at least a week. https://DoubleDaggerArt.com

KIT

15 x 10 in, four solid cherry blocks, Guerra Paint & Pigment: Cerulean Blue Medium, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Quinacridone 195, Tetra-Chloro Periwinkle on Shin Torinoko, edition 14. I tend to experiment with new directions in these Baren print exchanges. In this one, I tried converting my 20+ years ago development of squiggly cross-hatched drawings from drawing squiggles to carving away the squiggles. I don’t dislike the resulting print, but I think I’ll want to work with a finer and denser line and more levels of hatching in the next effort. Interesting start, though IMHO… https://mlyon.com

Guajiro Cubano

15 x 10 in, One, linoleum, Speedball black printmaking ink on Thai Kozo, edition 18. Guajiro is the endearing name of the traditional Cuban peasant farmer. Usually isolated in deep rural areas working the land, traveling by horse and living in a small bohío and very rustic conditions. Here in this old magazine design he is shown wearing the traditional Cuban guayabera shirt and hat.

Between

15 x 10 in, 2 blocks, shina,, watercolour, nori on Pantion, edition 14. The blocks will continue to be used in more complex images, as several other blocks were also carved. The dilemma is between the discipline of an edition and the joy of a series of variations.
