Lure me in
13 x 6 in, 2 cherry planks, Daniel Smith oil base ink on BFK tan, edition 100. Process: Color block scrolled sailed into 1 Piece, Pink, Tank, Orange, Red, Purple, Inked separately and assembled at press key block overprinted in umber and Purple. Hiking alone sometimes results in some strange and wonderful events, as the feet trudge through rocky washes and rugged trails, the mind goes off on a fantastic journey of its own around three parts, there are a myriad of slot canyons, many well off the beaten path I like to find them and then… What are you looking at: I’m trying to see how deep you go, O, I’m deep alright, why not come in and find out (silence), It’s really cool in here and the breeze is fresh and smells like wet sandstone, Are you trying to lure me? Why not, what are you afraid of? Not much out here – your eyes are staring at me, is there a way out? The water carved me and my eyes, the wind rounded me smooth, both of them found a way in and they found a way out. Just follow the water – follow the wind – then follow the light.

Untitled
13 x 6 in, One Jigsaw Block, Charbonnel Aqua Wash on BFK Rives, edition 24. The Block is a flitch out of walnut. So, the outer shape is the shape of the tree limb. A jigsaw was then used to cut each separate color apart like a puzzle.

Nature
13 x 6 in, One shina block – white line print, Akua Kolor on Nishinouchi, edition 50. Not being an abstract artist, I struggled with the concept of the color field. I enjoy other artist work of the period but had to find my way. I found it by looking at my ocean view home and seeing the color field in nature. Enjoyed the challenge white line print using only one block.

Trying to Understand
13 x 6 in, Matsumura shina plywood, Rice paste plus pigment colours, Golden open acrylic black on 30-year-old washi, edition 48. Printed with ball-bearing baren. Title was going to be trying to understand Mark Rothko but the result wasn’t near enough so I shortened the title.

Incalescence
13 x 6 in, Plywood, Speedball water based block printing ink on Bristol, edition 23. I haven’t made a purely abstract woodcut in a long time. It was a pleasant challenge.

Cairn
13 x 6 in, Alder wood – actually for making a nice smoky taste on BBQ, Schminke on Fabriano 5, edition 30. I Intended this to be more of an abstract composition but, it mutated and I seem to be cursed into making only representational images. Reduction printed in 5 colours from one block.

Color Fields
13 x 6 in, Shina, Gouche on Masa, edition AP. While the composition is abstract in concept, during printing the image became a sunset over green fields.
Julio Rodriguez, Skokie, IL (USA)
Midnight Lover
13 x 6 in, Linoleum & Wood Matrix, Blick’s printing inks on White Heavy, edition 28. Color field as the theme for this exchange the use of color as the main compositional idea in abstract art. Had different thoughts when creating this image the two lovers are my wife Maria and Me. I often wonder what people think when they see us together because we do not look anything alike. I will let you ponder who is the one carrying all the extra weight. LOL

Summer of Hate
13 x 6 in, Basswood, Sumi ink and water colours on shin torinoko, edition 28. I pushed for the color field challenge but when it came time to print my mood had changed, just like the country’s. The print can be interpreted in many ways, I will leave it to the observer to find their own meaning.
Laura Szabo-Roberts, Somonauk, IL (USA)
